Stop Ignoring Climate Change

Bushfires all around Australia, becoming more and more extreme. Fricky thunderstorms tearing through cities in minutes, leaving hundreds of broken trees and electricity poles. And yet, the Australian government keeps ignoring the facts. Climate Change.

It’s going to be a very unusual summer in Australia. Bushfire season started much earlier than the usual, way back in spring, and the fires are much more intense than ever before. The drought affected bushland in Australia’s east coast is drier than ever, resulting in so much “fuel” that may potentially burn. Normally the firefighters have some time to do what’s called back-burning, to manage controlled fires next to populated areas in order to reduce risk of fires later in the season.

Sydney, the largest and most beautiful city in Australia, which is world known for its iconic landmarks, surf beaches and blue skies, is more often than not covered in smoke haze this season, formally becoming one of the top 20 cities in the world with poor air quality. Surely something is totally not normal here, which you would expect should prompt immediate action by the authorities.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case. In the current political environment, either at the New South Wales state level as well as the Federal Government level, the land down under is experiencing complete lack of leadership. The Prime Minister, the NSW Premier and most ministers of Parliament are choosing to ignore the problem and refer to any link to the Climate Change debate. How can anyone ignore the facts so abruptly? How can they not face their own people and deal with the questions? If we ignore those questions how can we find the answers? Ignorance will not do well to this country. Same as it does not do well to the US and its ignorant leader.

AUSTRALIA-FIRES/KOALAS

So brace yourselves for a hecticly unusual summer, forget about bush camping this school holidays, and go out to the streets to protect our homes, literally, our children and the future of our country, humanity and planet earth.

My dear son, a year 4 student, wrote a letter to the Australian Prime Minister, asking for answers. Kids have the power and wisdom to ask honest and direct questions with no political correctness. I wish we all do that, especially in the current state of affairs. If our leaders are unable to lead, we should find new leaders. Bring on a new generation. We demand CLIMATE ACTION NOW!

I am seeing huge changes in our climate here this year too (South Africa). Something just isn’t right.

I suppose not too far from you the Victoria Falls seem to be diminishing. A striking evidence that it’s all heading in the wrong direction…

      1. It’s actually over 2000km’s away from me, roughly. But yes… climate change is happening all over…and it’s definitely the evidence of a ‘bigger picture’ problem.

Worrying changes indeed. Too hot in Australia, and constant rain in England.
We must all try to do what we can, though I fear it is already too late.
Many thanks for following my blog.

I have friends in Australia and one of them has lost a dear friend in the fires. I find watching the news coverage of the fires is harrowing and beyond disturbing. One Australian blogger referred to it as an “apocalypse”. I would have to agree with him. I am Canadian and there is much ignorance and poor decisions being made by governments both provincial and federal here too.

  5. Thank you very much for this insightful and touching post! I really value your opinion and perspective on this developing issue. I have recently published an article on my blog about the bushfire crisis but I have tried to portray the positive aspects and how others can assist. If you have time, it would be great if you could check out my post, as I would be interested to hear your thoughts! Thanks 🙂
