Where is Men’s Tennis NextGen?

Can someone please tell me what is going on? Why are we celebrating the immortal heroes of sports overall, and tennis in particular, amazed by the longevity and complete dominance of the older generation – Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal – who keep winning grand slams. The real question to ask is where the hack is men’s tennis next generation? Are these two really that strong? Or is it that they don’t really have any significant resistance from the younger generation. They clearly don’t, that was just a rhetorical question.

Honestly, I’m really worried. Not just about how boring men’s tennis have become, with the same guys winning everything over and over again. Nadal is a 13-time winner at the French Open, and nothing seems to be threatening him in the next 3 to 5 years. Djokovic is a 9-time winner at the Australian Open, the last one coming in a painfully easy straight sets win against the promising young russian. Really? Does that look promising? I’m telling you, there is something much more fundamental here than vast experience and record breaking. Something has gone terribly wrong!

Whether they are Generation Z or Millennials, I’m not entirely sure, but these young men are just not willing to work hard enough. That’s it, they are lazy. We’ve seen a few examples of young Aussie tennis players who are just bum heads, the complete opposite from role models, simply unwilling to dedicate themselves to the sport and push themselves to become better players, throwing away their talent in such an appalling way. Where are all the young guns we had seen in the past 10 years or so? Where are all those players we thought would break through as the future of tennis?

Grigor Dimitrov
David Goffin
Milos Raonic
Kei Nishikori
Nick Kyrgios
Matteo Berrettini
Daniil Medvedev
Andrey Rublev
Alexander Zverev
Dominic Thiem
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Denis Shapovalov

I rest my case. See you in 5 to 7 years after Rafa and Novak retire. This is just way too predictable, it takes the whole fun out of watching sports. The only thing we can hope for is the return of Roger Federer just before he turns 40 later this year, to try and take away some glory. When we lose hope in the young generation, we have to turn back to our veterans, our inspirations, our G.O.A.T.

100%! Today’s final was ridiculous! Boring. I’m so tired of the other players (I’m not even going to call them next gen because the are mid-twenties) not snake yo match up with Novak and Rafa. Come on!!

    1. Absolutely agree. So disappointing to see the lack of spirit, the absence of fighting till the end, the Never-Give-Up mindset. Something is definitely missing…
